Angry about something SCOTUS did? Michelle Obama would say, "Do something!"

We, here at Republic Retooled, strongly believe that the current U.S. Supreme Court majority is corrupt, captured, politicized and illegitimate and must be checked by the legislative branch (Congress) in order to stop this Roberts Court majority’s decades of legislating from the bench, such as destroying 100 years of campaign-finance law (the “Buckley line of cases”  --  although Buckley v. Valeo was before Roberts’ reign of terror), overturning Roe v. Wade, gutting the Voting Rights Act and a litany of other dangerous, unconscionable rulings and acts of judicial supremacy (all “prohibited by the Constitution because [these acts] fall[ ] far outside the narrow exceptions where judges can exercise a judicial veto over the work of legislators”) (please see our Newsletter, “Threats to American Democracy” (p. 2), “SCOTUS Rulings” (starts on p. 3), here: https://app.box.com/s/4g5qbrbo7q8dizi65j92sl9t48u17wti ).  (Note: We recommend reading the entire Threats to American Democracy section of our Newsletter, including the “SCOTUS Corruption” sub-section (pp. 9-11), so you obtain the benefit of our entire presentation regarding Roberts’ reign of terror.)

So, we are VERY angry about a LOT of things that SCOTUS did and we ARE going to "do something" about it! We are launching a new campaign parallel to our ongoing Fight for Our Freedoms campaign: our Expand the Court campaign. And we would love it if you could join us as we pursue the first goal of this campaign: realizing the passing of Court expansion legislation in the Senate -- the Supreme Court Biennial Appointments and Term Limits Act (SCBATL Act).

We want you to join us and contribute a small amount of time to helping us to achieve our goal. We ask that you please consider participating in a Zoom conference with Senator Laphonza Butler (if you reside in California), but we want to make sure you are angry enough about what SCOTUS is doing to us. So, we invite you to watch three videos on our YouTube channel regarding the most recent and quite egregious and dangerous ruling by this SCOTUS majority: the ruling on presidential immunity (Trump v. U.S.), here: https://youtu.be/ck7mv27vA18 , https://youtu.be/oUGF0IIwVAU , and https://youtu.be/t90VxOmGwXY .

Now, if all of the above does not motivate you to support our Expand the Court campaign, we give up.  On the other hand, if you reside in California and you want to help us get the SCBATL Act passed in the Senate Judiciary Committee and on the Senate floor for a vote  -- please join us in this Zoom conference with Senator Butler (or supporting us in some other way, e.g., signing a petition in support of this legislation). You can sign up by RSVPing on this blogsite and we will reach out to you (please include an email address in your RSVP) and confirm how you want to support this campaign and tell you about next steps.  (RSVP on our Event page: Click “Events” under “More” tab.)  We are requesting this Zoom conference with Senator Butler to ask for her vote for the bill in the Judiciary Committee and for her vote for the bill on the Senate floor.

(As we state on our Events page…)  After we have succeeded in passing the SCBATA Act in the Senate, our next goal will start with (based on our expectation that we will succeed with winning majority status in the U.S. House and protecting our majority status in the Senate and electing Harris/Walz in the 2024 election) beginning the work with our friends (all the NGOs who are supporting this legislation  --  see Note 1, below) on getting the SCBATL Act passed in the House, of course.

Note 1: The following NGOs support the SCBATL Act: The Brennan Center for Justice, Public Citizen, End Citizens United/Let America Vote Action Fund, True North Research, Public Citizen, Newtown Action Alliance, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), Accountable.US, Demand Justice, and Project on Government Oversight (POGO), and the Alliance for Justice endorsed the legislation (according to Senator Padilla’s news release  --  see that here: https://www.padilla.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/padilla-introduces-new-supreme-court-term-limits-bill/ ) .

The SCBATL Act will add three justices to the bench by 2029 (in Harris’ second term), assuming we can get this bill passed in Congress and signed by President Harris next year, if I understand the Act correctly  --  creating a 6 to 6 (conservative to non-conservative, hopefully) Court, which should lock down Roberts’ pursuit of his extreme agenda vis-à-vis the Court.  Then we will just have to win again in 2032 so we can add the tie-breaking, non-conservative Justice on the Court in 2034.  (That is, unless we can convince everybody in the Senate, who is now supporting the SCBATL Act, to first enact the Judiciary Act of 2023, now  --  so we can expand the Court RIGHT NOW to 13 Justices  --  and then maybe enact the SCBATL Act later?  We will have to talk to someone in Senator Padilla’s office about that.)

For now, we may have to accept that the SCBATL Act is our best bet, because it has five Senate Judiciary Committee votes (and four other co-sponsors) and, I presume, a better chance of getting it passed in committee and on the Senate floor for a vote  --  versus the Judiciary Act, which only has two co-sponsors.

So, let’s get to work!  Please go to the event page and RSVP (reminder: Click “Events” under “More” tab) to join the Zoom call with Senator Butler (or support us in some other way, like signing a petition to support the SCBATL Act).  We will reach out to you when we receive your RSVP (so please include an email address in your RSVP) to confirm your choice for how you want to support this effort.

We thank you for your time and for your support of this campaign!
